Running for abstraction.
Back when I first started running, in those first couple years, I did this thing which helped me push through the day to day rigor of step-after-step, klick-after-klick. I would track a mega-goal, a year long effort to run from point A to point B on a map: abstractly, on paper, as a mathematical exercise-meets-training plan. I haven't thought this way in years, and arguably I haven't trained as hard for much of anything since, but it occurred to me as I was putting together this site and digging through my archives that a 2020 mega-goal might be a good antidote to the marathon training blues. And since I'm off to Chicago in October, it might be interesting to see how close I can get on paper before then:
